As dog lovers, we all know how important our furry friends are in our lives. They bring us so much joy, comfort, and unconditional love, and it’s only natural that we want to celebrate them. That’s why the second Saturday of May has been designated as Dog Mom’s Day, a day to honor and celebrate all the amazing dog moms out there.

Dog Mom’s Day was created by Dig, a dog-centric dating app company, to recognize the bond between dogs and their human moms. It’s a day to celebrate the special relationship we have with our furry friends, and to acknowledge all the hard work and love that goes into being a dog mom, which is not always easy. It requires a lot of patience, dedication, and responsibility. From feeding and grooming to training and playing, being a dog mom is a full-time job. But it’s also one of the most rewarding jobs in the world.

Save the Pack

Many of us enjoy the great outdoors and all it has to offer. But how much thought do we give to the delicate ecosystems that make the outdoors so pleasurable? There are lots of natural ecosystems around the world, encompassing among others, forests, grasslands, deserts, and the ocean. Because of them, we and our pets thrive, but only if we can maintain sustainable environments. In many ways, our systems are fragile. It’s important to recognize for instance, how the extinction of one species affects another, and ultimately people. We humans play a vital role in ensuring the safety and continuance of our wildlife (while remaining at a safe distance, of course!).

Lots of animal species have become extinct over time (think dinosaurs); and, there are thousands of species in danger, many at risk because of human actions. We found a nice list of endangered animals and their conservation status on the World Wild Life‘s website. You might not be surprised at all to find the Black Rhino being listed as critically endangered, but you may be surprised to see Elephants on the endangered list as well. As you browse, you’ll likely find species you’ve never even heard of before. The nice thing about the list is that you can simply click on any of the species names to learn more about them, including why they matter, what is threatening them, what the World Life Fund is doing, and what you can do to help. 

Everyone can get involved

With much effort, each year, species such as the Great Panda and White Rhino are recovering and coming off the list. Consider the Bald Eagle, our national symbol in the U.S.  Until August 2007 eagles were on the endangered species list. With diligent human intervention, the Bald Eagle is prosperous today.  Unfortunately, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the current rate of animal species’ extinction remains much higher than the natural rate. Protecting endangered species is important for all of us. It’s good for our health, the economy, and the environment, according to Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, during his 2019 TEDxNashville talk:

  • It’s good for our health: activities like planting trees increases our air quality. Planting a garden provides healthy food. Using sustainable and eco-friendly products reduces our footprint. Getting our kids involved in these types of activities connects them to the world. It’s great for their cognitive, social, and emotional development. Getting your kids outdoors more, letting them explore (perhaps playing with their dog), creates healthy and memorable growth experiences.
  • It’s good for our economy: more than 7 million people have jobs associated with outdoor recreation. Simply put, the money we spend to enjoy nature and see wildlife directly provides income to fuel our economy. Wildlife watching alone generates billions annually. Additionally, ensuring healthy pollinators (think bees) contributes upward to $30 billion through more abundant food, which can then be sold, putting even more into our economy.
  • It’s good for our environment: places with healthier natural environments, which include healthy plants and wildlife, do better to withstand extreme natural weather events, such as wetlands that are able to absorb more water during a hurricane. Maintaining a healthy environment is a balancing act. Protecting our wildlife is a fundamental necessity.

The U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a flexible law that targets endangered species recovery, conservation, and wildlife dependent public relationships.  Through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service protection efforts include captive breeding programs, habitat protection, and a ban on deadly chemicals that could adversely affect animals or their food sources. Everyone can get involved, according to World Wild Life, by taking action and making donations to conservation organizations. Some of the simpler actions we can take, according to Endangered.org are:

  1. Visit a national wildlife refuge, park or other open space; (drive slowly to avoid harassing or killing animals).
  2. Learn about endangered animals in your area and make your home wildlife friendly by planting native plants and avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides.
  3. Recycle and buy sustainable products when possible, and do not purchase products known to be made from threatened or endangered species.

Dogs Need Fun in the Sun!

It’s August, and lots of pets are lying around enjoying the lazy dog days of summer. It seems like most dogs relish soaking up the sunshine, even when it’s really hot outside and they’re comfy in your cool air-conditioned house. It’s not uncommon to find your ‘inside’ dog laying in that one spot where the sun shines through your window or peers down through a skylight, especially during long summer afternoons. We muse at them; happy they’re enjoying the warmth of the sun. You might wonder though – is it good for your dog to bask in the hot sun? Are they getting enough? Are they getting too much? We wondered about that, too, and found it’s healthy for dogs to get the right amount of sun exposure. In fact, they need it.

We humans really enjoy the warmth of the sun. Most of us realize the right amount of sun exposure can be healthy because it helps produce vitamin D, which is essential for regulating how much calcium and phosphate is in our body. We need essential vitamins and minerals to keep our bones and muscles healthy. Most humans know too much sun can cause problems. Too little can too. We need regular doses. The right exposure time depends on your skin’s sensitivity. As a general rule, we should be getting 10 – 30 minutes of midday exposure, three or four times a week. Have you ever felt sluggish on cloudy days or have difficulty sleeping on days you haven’t seen the sun? Regular (i.e. daily) doses of sunshine help to keep spirits up and the circadian rhythm in check. It’s the same for our pets; periodic sun exposure provides similar health benefits.

For our pets, the sun:

Supplies Vitamin D: Sunshine is a source of vitamin D production (just as it is for humans!). Vitamin D is important for dogs. According to PuppyLeaks, the sun helps dogs absorb calcium, regulate phosphorus balance, and is critical for bone formation and muscle and nerve control. The Dog Place tells us that Vitamin D also “affects your dog’s thyroid, metabolic balance, heat cycles and libido.”

Regulates Sleep Cycle: Sunshine affects your dog’s healthy circadian rhythm, according to Dogs Naturally Magazine. The early morning sun rays help your dog know that it’s time to wake up and the evening sun’s red hues fading to dark helps your dog calm down and get ready to go to sleep. Much like humans, dogs may not sleep well if they don’t have exposure to the sun to naturally feel when it’s time to sleep and when it’s time to be awake.

Ensures Good Moods: Sunlight helps the brain release Serotonin, and that helps us all feel better. Even though our pups are great companions and love us unconditionally, they may still get down (lethargic or depressed), especially if they are alone all day long while we’re away. Whole Dog Journal points out that without enough sunshine in their day making them happy, they could become a bit more snarly than usual. Serotonin, with the help of a bit of sunlight, improves their mood, according to The Dog Place.

If your dog is more of a couch potato than a sun worshiper, it might take more than a quick outside walk to get the sun’s health benefits; it takes regular exposure. Whole Dog Journal recommends 20 to 40 minutes of unfiltered solar rays, twice each day, as a regular healthy dose for dogs. Getting small 10-minute doses several times throughout the day can also be beneficial.

But be sun savvy. Just like humans, too much sun can be harmful to your pooch. Dogs are susceptible to sun burn and skin cancer just like us. Whole Dog Journal suggests checking the ultraviolet (UV) index before spending too much time in the sun; higher than 7 will cause certain dogs to be more susceptible to skin cancer. Dogs need to have protection from prolonged exposure to the sun. Perhaps a shady place, or even a “made for dogs” sunscreen application will do the trick, according to PuppyLeaks. Fortunately, most dogs know when they’ve had enough direct sun exposure. They’re smart enough to move to a shadier spot (unlike some of us humans!)!

Making Waves to Save the Earth

June is national Ocean month! World Ocean Day is celebrated on June 8, 2020; it was proposed by Canada in 1992. World Ocean Day is intended for people around the world to celebrate, honor, protect and restore the ocean. Many of us don’t give our oceans a lot of thought because they appear to be so vast, with seemingly endless amounts of water, and would seem to be just fine. In reality, our oceans are a vital resource and we humans may be causing them to go off-balance.

The world’s oceans are valuable natural resources that connect all of us around the world together. Ships sailing across the ocean carry people, goods, or supplies from one continent to the next. We use our oceans for recreational activities, like surfing, scuba diving, and whale watching. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc (NRDC), oceans also “govern the weather, clean the air, help feed the world, and provide a living for millions [of people]”. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tell us our magnificent oceans contain an immense amount of marine life, which is a source of food, medicine, and other sustainable compounds. NOAA also reminds us that the Great Lakes, as well as other bodies of water throughout the world, supply us drinking water. We need our beautiful oceans to survive and thrive, for economic, fun, and nutritional reasons… and they are at risk. Our charge as good stewards of our oceans and water supplies is to find a balance between environmental needs and our human needs.

One of the biggest pollutants in our water sources is plastic, particularly from plastic grocery bags and water bottles. Even if you live inland, your plastic can end up in local waterways and ultimately cause harm to sea life, including birds, fish, and crabs. Further away, the plastic washes up on shores around the world, causing magnificent beaches to be littered with debris, which could harm local tourism and associated jobs, as well as potentially harming marine life. It’s why 4Ocean was founded. You may have seen some of 4Ocean’s commercials or read about them recently. They are an organization focused on cleaning plastic out of our oceans, globally. They’ve cleaned up over eight million pounds of plastic out of our oceans since 2017. 4Ocean relies on local people to assist in their efforts; if you’d like to jump in to help, look at their website to find things you can do.

Our ocean health affects our access to safe drinking water. According to the Ocean Conservatory organization, there are billions of people around the world (including in the U.S.) living without clean, safe drinking water . Many don’t realize where the water we use comes from. The Ocean Conservancy organization also explains how the ocean is an integral part of our water cycle; evaporated ocean water returns to the earth in the form of rain, which flows through our lakes, rivers, and streams, then back to the ocean.

Each of us can do something to help our oceans thrive – from seemingly small acts such reducing our reliance on plastic, reusing and recycling appropriately, to big global acts such as starting an organization with a mission to clean up our water supply chain. The Ocean Conservatory organization publishes key programs and activities during the month of June.
