Dog Mom’s Day

As dog lovers, we all know how important our furry friends are in our lives. They bring us so much joy, comfort, and unconditional love, and it’s only natural that we want to celebrate them. That’s why the second Saturday of May has been designated as Dog Mom’s Day, a day to honor and celebrate all the amazing dog moms out there.

Dog Mom’s Day was created by Dig, a dog-centric dating app company, to recognize the bond between dogs and their human moms. It’s a day to celebrate the special relationship we have with our furry friends, and to acknowledge all the hard work and love that goes into being a dog mom, which is not always easy. Single vs Double Layers

We’ve received several questions asking about our double and single layer dog gear. One of the most frequently asked is “what is the difference between double and single layer?” We understand it can be difficult enough to decide on which one of our eleven solid colors is right for your pooch. Having to decide whether a single-layer or double-layer dog product is right for you might just seem to complicate things, especially when ordering on-line. We know it can be quite daunting to make sure you’re ordering the right dog gear. We’re happy to answer any and all of your questions and will clarify the advantages of each of our options in this post.

What is the difference between double and single layer?

We’ll start by covering basic color options. We’ve created product styles in a ‘Colors Inspired by Nature’ solid color collection. Our buckle collars come in eleven solid colors and optionally, depending on the style, they can be mixed. We coordinate two of our solid colors in our Eco Hip collection. Eco Hip combines two complementary colors and typically comes with a cool ‘hippy’ fringe finish. The more commonly sought-after color combinations are listed and ready to order easily; other color combinations are available as a custom order.

If you want to make your own color combination, simply order the style you’d like and let us know the specific colors you want in the order text. We’ve also created nine ‘Save the Earth’ ribbon designs. These unique designs (hand-sewn to a single layer of bamboo webbing) represent important environmental concerns.

Bamboo is a natural sustainable plant-based resource

We offer our solid color dog and cat gear in a single or double layer of bamboo webbing material. Bamboo is a natural sustainable plant-based resource, and therefore eco-friendly; naturally anti-bacterial and odor resistant; breathable and hypoallergenic (we’ve had several customers state that their dog no longer scratches or has rashes when wearing our dog gear); and it is easily machine washable and fast drying. Both our single and double-layer products have advantages:

Single Layer (comfort collection): One layer of bamboo webbing offers more pliability / flexibility and may be lighter and more comfortable for your pet. Older and less active dogs and pets that don’t pull hard when on a leash may prefer the extra comfort a single layer of material provides.

Double Layer (solid and eco hip collections): Two layers of bamboo webbing, either both the same solid color, or combined complimentary colors (our Eco Hip collection). Doubling the material makes the product more structured, making it easier for some pet owners to use. New double layer collars arrive a little stiff and soften nicely with wear. Lots of pet parents prefer the double layer because it wears well on stronger breeds and very active dogs.

Fashionable, comfortable, and strong

Most of our colors are available in three different widths. Cat and puppy collars come in ½” width (limited colors). Small and medium sizes come in ¾” width. Large and X-Large sizes come in 1” width. If you prefer a non-standard width, ask us if the color you prefer is available in your desired width; if it is, we’re happy to customize dog gear for you.

Dogs Need Fun in the Sun!

It’s August, and lots of pets are lying around enjoying the lazy dog days of summer. It seems like most dogs relish soaking up the sunshine, even when it’s really hot outside and they’re comfy in your cool air-conditioned house. It’s not uncommon to find your ‘inside’ dog laying in that one spot where the sun shines through your window or peers down through a skylight, especially during long summer afternoons. We muse at them; happy they’re enjoying the warmth of the sun. You might wonder though – is it good for your dog to bask in the hot sun? Are they getting enough? Are they getting too much? We wondered about that, too, and found it’s healthy for dogs to get the right amount of sun exposure. In fact, they need it.

We humans really enjoy the warmth of the sun. Most of us realize the right amount of sun exposure can be healthy because it helps produce vitamin D, which is essential for regulating how much calcium and phosphate is in our body. We need essential vitamins and minerals to keep our bones and muscles healthy. Most humans know too much sun can cause problems. Too little can too. We need regular doses. The right exposure time depends on your skin’s sensitivity. As a general rule, we should be getting 10 – 30 minutes of midday exposure, three or four times a week. Have you ever felt sluggish on cloudy days or have difficulty sleeping on days you haven’t seen the sun? Regular (i.e. daily) doses of sunshine help to keep spirits up and the circadian rhythm in check. It’s the same for our pets; periodic sun exposure provides similar health benefits.

For our pets, the sun:

Supplies Vitamin D: Sunshine is a source of vitamin D production (just as it is for humans!). Vitamin D is important for dogs. According to PuppyLeaks, the sun helps dogs absorb calcium, regulate phosphorus balance, and is critical for bone formation and muscle and nerve control. The Dog Place tells us that Vitamin D also “affects your dog’s thyroid, metabolic balance, heat cycles and libido.”

Regulates Sleep Cycle: Sunshine affects your dog’s healthy circadian rhythm, according to Dogs Naturally Magazine. The early morning sun rays help your dog know that it’s time to wake up and the evening sun’s red hues fading to dark helps your dog calm down and get ready to go to sleep. Much like humans, dogs may not sleep well if they don’t have exposure to the sun to naturally feel when it’s time to sleep and when it’s time to be awake.

Ensures Good Moods: Sunlight helps the brain release Serotonin, and that helps us all feel better. Even though our pups are great companions and love us unconditionally, they may still get down (lethargic or depressed), especially if they are alone all day long while we’re away. Whole Dog Journal points out that without enough sunshine in their day making them happy, they could become a bit more snarly than usual. Serotonin, with the help of a bit of sunlight, improves their mood, according to The Dog Place.

If your dog is more of a couch potato than a sun worshiper, it might take more than a quick outside walk to get the sun’s health benefits; it takes regular exposure. Whole Dog Journal recommends 20 to 40 minutes of unfiltered solar rays, twice each day, as a regular healthy dose for dogs. Getting small 10-minute doses several times throughout the day can also be beneficial.

But be sun savvy. Just like humans, too much sun can be harmful to your pooch. Dogs are susceptible to sun burn and skin cancer just like us. Whole Dog Journal suggests checking the ultraviolet (UV) index before spending too much time in the sun; higher than 7 will cause certain dogs to be more susceptible to skin cancer. Dogs need to have protection from prolonged exposure to the sun. Perhaps a shady place, or even a “made for dogs” sunscreen application will do the trick, according to PuppyLeaks. Fortunately, most dogs know when they’ve had enough direct sun exposure. They’re smart enough to move to a shadier spot (unlike some of us humans!)!

The Dog Days of Summer

A lot of people associate the “dog days of summer” with that time of year when your pooch lays around, doesn’t seem to have much energy, and generally prefers air conditioning to being outside. And, they’re right . . . sort of.

The origin of “dog days” is interesting.  It actually doesn’t have anything to do with dogs, or with being lazy during the summer. It all started with the ancient Greeks and Romans. ‘Dog Days’ were days that Sirius, the dog star (Canis major in the Orion constellation) could be seen rising just before dawn – generally after the summer solstice (National Geographic). Those were days that just happened to be the hottest days of the year, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. At one time it was believed the early rising of Sirius could bring on fever, or catastrophe, or strange phenomenon like dogs acting crazy! (TreeHugger)

Today we know better of course.  But we can still find the ‘dog days’ marked on the calendar – from July 3 to August 11 each year – although depending on where you live, the long, hot days could start a little earlier and last a bit longer (Old Farmer’s Almanac)!  In the Northern Hemisphere, the dog days of summer tend to be the season’s hottest days, days when we humans are inclined to experience less of an appetite and seem to prefer less physical activity (unless we’re around refreshing water or air conditioning)! Our pets feel the dog days too. They may prefer doing nothing to doing anything at all! Rest assured, if that’s your experience, there’s probably nothing wrong. That’s just the nature of “the dog days of summer”!

How can you help your best friend through the dog days this summer? You might consider a few of the way’s we humans stay cool. Your pooch needs to stay cool too, just like you. According to the Daily Herald and the Farmers Almanac , here are a few ways to help keep your dog safe, healthy, and hydrated during these hot summer days:

  • Provide cool water to play in: a kiddie pool (with fun toys, of course), playing at a dog-friendly splash pad or running through a water sprinkler. If you let them swim in a chlorinated pool, though, keep them supervised and rinse the chlorine off afterward to prevent skin irritations. Not all dogs naturally know how to swim. If you go to a river, lake, or beach, use a bright colored life preserver. While wading along the edges of the water, attach a rope to your dog to keep her safe, within reach, and avoid getting carried away.
  • Do not leave dogs in a hot car. Cars quickly heat up to deathly temperatures. If you take your pooch with you, place a reminder in the front seat so you don’t accidentally leave your dog at risk. Additionally, if you’re planning a long road trip, try to take several smaller trips in advance so your dog can get used to being in the car for extended times. Allow time for your dog to acclimate to its new environment upon arrival. And, of course, pack appropriately, including a bowl and plenty of water.
  • Provide fresh, extra cold water regularly. Dogs need extra water during the dog days, so fill up their water bowl frequently. You may wish to add ice cubes to keep the water cold longer.
  • If you have a dog that is primarily outside, be sure there is plenty of shade available and / or let them into the garage to cool off, especially during the hot afternoon. You may also want to provide a cool wet towel in a shady area for your dog to lie on or a frozen water bottle for him to lean against while lounging in the yard.
  • If you walk or run with your dog, do it during the cooler morning or evening times so it’s not so hard on either of you. The concrete or asphalt that you’re walking or running on could be extremely hot on your dog’s paw pads, causing severe pain or blisters. Take plenty of water for both of you.
  • Consider a trim rather than a shave if you normally clip your dog’s fur. While their fur and undergrowth may make them seem a little warmer, trimming it rather than shaving it will protect your dog from sunburn.
  • Give frozen treats. A few simple ideas are frozen fruit or vegetables, such as blueberries, peas, and green beans. Ice cubes can be hard on your dog’s teeth, so consider freezing beef or chicken broth and give them to your dogs as ice pops.
  • Inside, allow your dog to cool off by lying on tile floors, lying under a ceiling fan, etc., away from hot, sunny windows.
  • Panting is normal, but excessive panting can be a sign of heat stroke or dehydration. If you observe your dog panting excessively, being lethargic, having a decrease in urination, a significant decrease in appetite, vomiting, an increased heart rate, or bright red gums and tongue, contact your veterinarian for guidance.
  • Dogs with short noses or dark fur are more prone to heat stress, as are overweight dogs, older dogs, and those with medical problems. Keep an eye on them and contact your vet if needed.
  • Do call your vet if you think your pup could be overheated. You may want to wrap your dog in cool wet towels until your vet can examine your dog.

One more tip: you may want to ease up on what your pet wears during these dog days of summer. For example, you may want to lose the bandana or other heavy dog-wear and choose lighter, comfortable dog gear.

Giving this to dogs could harm them!

Thanksgiving across the U.S. brings families together to give thanks – and to enjoy a lot of delicious food! But did you know that this time-honored tradition can make dogs extremely sick? A lot of dogs get table scraps at this time of year, particularly on the day after Thanksgiving. And, many dogs get taken to pet emergency rooms after the holiday because of what they ate. According to PetMd.com, the fatty foods that we humans eat at Thanksgiving are harmful to dogs and can trigger pancreatitis in dogs.

You may think that your dog is immune. You may have occasionally fed your dog fatty leftovers in the past, such as mashed potatoes (with butter or cream cheese) or chicken pieces (including the skin) and not had any problem. However, especially in light of typical Thanksgiving meal doses, there are several things that dogs should not eatelse they risk a Black Friday trip to the vet. According to School For The Dogs, in addition to high fat foods such as ham, pan drippings, and turkey skins, dogs should avoid eating onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, nutmeg, sage, and alcohol.

PreventiveVet.com adds to the list of human food dogs should avoid, by including stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied yams, corn on the cob, yeast bread or rolls, and desserts. But, fear not, there are table scraps, i.e. treats, that your dog can enjoy during the holidays. Raw vegetables, such as green beans and carrots, are generally healthy for dogs, as are apple slices and pumpkin puree. Canine Journal offers a list of human food that dogs should avoidand human food that is safe for dogs.

If it’s too hard to resist giving your dog some of these delicious table scraps, perhaps thinking about your dog’s potential suffering and the vet bill will help you. Jasper, our 13-year old Weimaraner, normally only eats his dog food and raw plain fruits and vegetables (he loves carrots, apples, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, bananas, and green beans). We were a bit surprised recently when his normally controlled irritable bowel (IBD) flared. Jasper doesn’t get fatty scraps. We took him to the vet and discovered he had pancreatitis.  Although there are other causes, we found out that normally pancreatitis in dogs is associated with eating too many fatty foods. That’s how we discovered from our vet that Black Friday is usually a really busy day for emergency pet facilities. After a couple of anxious days on an IV, a dehydrated Jasper returned back to normal. We were fortunate because pancreatitis can be extremely serious.

So, for two days at the vet, a few tests, and a night at the emergency clinic, plus a few more days of rest, we faced a bill for a bit over $1,500 USD.  While we never discovered what caused pancreatitis in Jasper, we learned a lot about what causes pancreatitis in most dogs. The bottom line is, we recommend being disciplined . . . and keeping your pooch away from holiday food to minimize the risks. Please talk to your vet about any symptoms you’re uncertain about or if your dog is exhibiting unusual traits or behaviors.

Love Dog Collar & Leash on dogPet ownership has become such a natural part of our lives that, today, more than 60% of U.S. households are home to one or more dogs and/or cats. There are many, many positive effects that can be directly attributed to pet ownership. Among them are better fitness and health (such as with walking a dog), less stress (from actions such as petting your cat or dog), and an emphasis on nurturing behavior (who doesn’t like a hug?). They guard us, help out with hunting, proudly compete, provide service, and become our true companions. We choose our pets for a wide variety of reasons. Pet ownership comes with great reward and great responsibility to offer our pets a good home and a better life. February is designated as Responsible Pet Owners Month to bring attention to the things we humans can do to make a better life for our pets, and ourselves.

Wagging Green’s Love Dog Design celebrates and represents responsible pet ownership. We share our environment with our pets and for the most part, we act as responsible pet owners. The American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA)  lists several things we an do, starting with our commitment when making the decision about which pet(s) to bring into our lives and understanding the financial and time obligations we’ll have for our pet(s). Of curse, AVMA also highlights that we need to obey all ordinances, such as cleaning up after our pets, following leash laws (which protect your pet as well as others), not contributing to over-population, and preparing for emergencies.

Fido Friendly adds to the importance of being prepared, including traveling safely with your pet. Family Pet also offers tips for responsible pet ownership, starting with regular visits to the vet and ensuring that pets are spayed/neutered to reduce pet overpopulation; February is also national Spay/Neuter month, so you may find spay/neuter discounts in February. According to the ASPCA, 6.5 million animals enter shelters every year, and tragically 1.5 million of those pets are euthanized. Responsible pet ownership requires an on-going commitment, non-emotional decisions, and sometimes, some getting help (including talking with your veterinarian about any issues or finding a training resource). Unfortunately however, pet abandonment and abuse has grown and that has created a predominantly negative effect, primarily because too many people have underestimated the true responsibilities involved with pet ownership. We humans move about the country, our time commitments and / or financial priorities change, and we live our lives in an uncertain world. At the same time, our pets grow uncontrollably, they make noise, they don’t always do what we expect or want, they don’t always get along well with others, and sometimes they get sick and / or need medical attention. These complexities are among the top abandonment reasons cited by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy. Simply stated, pet ownership isn’t something that can be taken lightly.
